Order a birth certificate online
Birth certificates are available from 1864 to the present day. You can order a birth certificate online from the General Register Office for Northern Ireland (GRONI). You will need a credit or debit card to use this service.
Due to essential maintenance, the GRONI online service will be unavailable from 6.00 pm on Friday 15 November to 8.00 am on Monday 18 November 2024. This will affect customers wishing to use online certificate ordering services or record search facilities. Apologies for any inconvenience.
Before you start
You can order a birth or a commemorative birth certificate online. You will need a credit or debit card and the following information:
- full name of person whose birth certificate you are ordering
- date and place of birth (district or street and town)
- names of parents (including mother's maiden name)
- mother's address at time of birth
A certificate cannot be sent out if you have not given the full details needed when you order.
New parents
If you have recently become a parent, make sure you have registered your child’s birth with your local council office before applying for a birth certificate.
Certificates cannot be given until a birth has been registered.

For the purposes of detection and prevention of crime, information about your application may be passed on to other government or law enforcement agencies.
