Iniscarn Forest
Iniscarn Forest is a small wood of just over 130 hectares lying to the west of Desertmartin village. The forest area has various conifer species and about four hectares of mature hardwoods, mostly oak.
Activities
A way-marked walking trail follows the gravel road uphill through the forest to a stile which provides access onto a moorland path. This path runs to the mast at the summit of Slieve Galleon.
There may be restrictions on access to parts of the forest from time to time due to forest operations so pay attention to safety signage.
About this forest
There is a small network of forest roads, which leads to a moorland path. This path runs to the mast at the summit of Slieve Galleon. There are panoramic views of counties Antrim, Londonderry and Down.
Iniscarn contains many species of birds and animals. Buzzards can be seen in springtime displaying over the mature hardwood areas. Occasionally hen harriers can be spotted hunting on the open moorland next to the forest.
How to get there
The forest is off the A29 Tobermore to Moneymore road. As you reach Desertmartin take the left turn before the shop. Follow this road for three miles until you come to a T-junction. Turn left. The forest is half a mile on the right.
Parking is allowed at the forest entrance. Visitor parking must not block access for forestry vehicles.
