Support team worker
There are various posts within the healthcare team which provide support for health and social care services. These positions are essential to the smooth operation and delivery of care. Some examples of these posts are outlined on this page.
Laundry operatives/ assistants
No hospital can function without a first-class laundry service. It is essential for patients’ comfort and hygiene. Laundry managers make sure that supplies of spotlessly clean linen are available when and where they are needed.
Assistants see that the laundry is properly washed and presented, minimising the risk of infection.
Central sterile supply assistants
The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) provides a sterilisation or decontamination service for equipment used in different areas of healthcare including operating theatres and accident and emergency departments.
Tasks include dismantling decontaminated devices, reassembling them and examining them under a microscope or magnifier before they can be sterilised.
Operating department orderly (ODO)
Orderlies or theatre support workers transfer patients, who might be very ill or anxious, between the wards and the operating theatre. They also look after vital theatre equipment such as oxygen cylinders, and make sure that the operating area stays clean and tidy.
