Shared Lives scheme for Northern Ireland
The Shared Lives scheme for Northern Ireland (NI) offers an alternative to respite, short breaks for adults in need of support, as well as providing information on how you can become involved as a Host Carer.
About Shared Lives Northern Ireland (NI)
‘Shared Lives’ enables people in need of support to live with, or have a short break with, a host carer.
It supports people to stay within their local communities, to live independently for longer, to develop new friendships and to give their families and carers a break.
The scheme matches a person in need of support with a host carer who understands their needs and has similar interests and hobbies.
It is an alternative form of traditional social care that is a regulated service which will provide assurance for all involved.

Being a Shared Lives host carer
Shared Lives host carers are specially recruited and trained individuals who share homes and their family lives with the people they are supporting.
Anyone over the age of 21 can become a host carer.
You don’t need formal qualifications or experience – just the right attitude and willingness to share your life with another person.
