Legal aid for victims of domestic abuse
If you are a victim of domestic abuse, you may be able to get help with your legal costs to protect you and your children.
Protection from the abuser
You may get legal costs to apply to the courts for a Non Molestation or Occupation Order against the person abusing you. This will protect you and your children, from being harassed, pestered, intimidated, or threatened with violence or abuse.
If an abuser wants contact with children
You may also be able to get help with your legal costs if your abuser applies for your children to live with them, or they want contact with the children and you want to challenge that. To get this help with your legal costs you have to prove that you have been a victim of domestic abuse.
Full legal costs
Depending on your income, your savings and any property you own, you may be entitled to have all your legal costs paid, or you may have to pay some of your legal costs yourself.
Paying costs
You should talk to your solicitor who will be able to help you calculate the amount of costs which you may have to pay, if any, as they will have experience of completing legal aid applications. They will also explain to you how any costs or parts of the cost can be paid.
