A Power of Attorney is written authorisation to act on another’s behalf in private, business or legal matters, including a probate application. The person authorising the other to act is known as the ‘principal’, ‘grantor’ or ‘donor’, and the person authorised to act is the ‘attorney’.

It is advisable to seek legal advice, as careful consideration should be given to the range of powers you wish to give to your attorney.
These should also be agreed with your attorney before they begin to act on your behalf.
There are separate forms to apply for a Power of Attorney if there is a Will (NIPF6a) or if there is no Will (NIPF6b).
Apply by post
You will need to print out the application form below, fill it out by hand, and post it, along with the probate application form, to the Probate Office.
