Affordable housing through housing associations
Registered housing associations are social housing landlords. They provide rented accommodation to people who are eligible for social housing in Northern Ireland.
Not-for-profit
Housing associations are run as not-for-profit organisations. They can use any surplus:
- to maintain existing homes
- to finance new properties
Housing association tenants
Tenants in housing association properties are usually in 'housing need' having shown they're eligible. Some housing associations specialise in providing housing to people who need special support.
All housing associations must have written policies explaining:
- housing services they provide
- who can apply for housing
- how they consider applications
To become a tenant, you need to apply for housing association accommodation and go on the waiting list.
Waiting list
Registered housing associations take most new tenants from the common waiting list. The Housing Executive maintains the list. For more information about the waiting list, contact the local Housing Executive district office.
