Pre-school education places
The Pre-School Education Programme funds education for children in the year before they start primary school. Pre-school education is available to every child but it's not essential. If you want your child to have pre-school education, you need to apply for a place.
Children eligible for pre-school education places
Children born between 2 July 2020 and 1 July 2021 (target age) are eligible to apply for a funded pre-school education place starting in September 2024.
Deferral for younger children
The School Age (Northern Ireland) Act 2022 now allows the parents or guardians of Young for Year to defer the start of pre-school and in turn primary school for their child for one year. If the child defers before starting pre-school, they will then start pre-school in September following their fourth birthday and primary school in September following their fifth birthday.
You can find more information about this at: Deferral of Pre-School or Primary school places
