The Traveller community
The Traveller community is long established in Northern Ireland and its history and traditions stretch back many years. It is against the law to discriminate against the Irish Traveller community, which is protected under Race Relations legislation.
Information on Traveller accommodation
The Northern Ireland Housing Executive (NIHE) has responsibility for all Traveller sites.
Local NIHE district offices are responsible for:
- the management of serviced sites in their area
- the allocation of pitches on their serviced sites
- transit sites in their area
The local offices work with Department for Communities (DfC) and Registered Housing Associations to provide suitable accommodation for Travellers and to improve living conditions wherever possible.
You can find more on the NIHE and DfC websites.
